I have a son who is a senior in high school. (I feel very old just saying that. Like, how??) Senior spring has hit him badly and he just wants to be done with school and his assignments and I don’t blame him. He’s worked his butt off the past four years and he’s ready for a break.
I think his senioritis has rubbed off on me because the weeks feel torturously long. It has been nearly impossible for me to feel motivated or to get anything done. I mean, I’ve been trying to write a newsletter for the last month—probably longer—and I just can’t do it. When I do try and write, everything comes out wrong and nothing at all like what I had plotted out in my head.
But I did want to say hi—HI!—because it has been a while since I’ve been here. I also wanted to let you know about a couple of upcoming events.
Boston! I’m stoked to head back to Boston next week for two events.
June 4, 7pm at Porter Square Books for a panel on “Women in Sports” with fellow authors Letisha Brown,
, and Katie Steele. So excited that is joining us and will be moderating the conversation. The event is free but please RSVP here.June 6 at the Female Athlete Conference: If you’re attending the conference next week, I’m speaking on a panel at 10:30am about how we can translate science and data through story. I’m speaking alongside Letisha, Maggie and Katie and we’ll be joined by Lauren Fleshman. Sarah Lesko will be moderating.
Chicago! I’ll be heading your way later this summer.
July 18 at the Wildwood Running Naperville Clinic: This event brings expert speakers from across the country together to support and empower girls in running as well as their coaches. I’m honored to be the keynote speaker. More info and register here.

Do you lift weights? You probably should thank Jan Todd. I had a chance to interview Jan when I was reporting my book and she is a legend.
Should we be trying to stop menopause? (Curious about your thoughts on this one.)
Gotta admit, as a solo runner, I’m not a fan of run clubs.
And this one2 about identity and worthiness and how hard it can be to break free from how others perceive us.
Thanks for being here. More soon.

This one too.
1. Trying to stop menopause seems to me to be like trying to 'cure' neurodivergence. The greater mismatch is between the symptom and the external societal norms, surely. Messing with reproductive hormones in the name of some positive outcome has sometimes had worse consequences (flattened affect / mood impacts; the use of birth control pills to manage symptoms of RED-S without actually addressing the underlying causes).
2. Hot take - run club haters (myself included? yes and no) are just salty that running now appears to be the province of the popular kids. (Much as the geek dad complains 'Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons weren't even remotely considered cool when I was your age'.) ;)
So tempted to come to the Women in Sports author panel with my daughter ... bit of a drive on a school night (but as she said, track will be over so it's ok).
Not convinced on the stopping menopause ... more research into how it works and affects all parts of our bodies wouldn't hurt though.
